An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the citizens of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading culprits were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industry shut down, though it remains a successful and blooming town today, principally due to its proximity to the capital, plus its outstanding road and rail links.
