The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the town which grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the people of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading culprits were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many presumed witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck many times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a lot of its manufacturing plants shut down, even so it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, mostly due to the closeness to London, plus its superb rail and road communications.

Chelmsford can be found close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London.
