Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, approximately 32 mls from the city of London. The town has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around the first century AD, and the village that evolved surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading agitators were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a significant industrial town in the 19th Cent, making goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered significant decline during the nineteen-eighties, since much of its manufacturing facilities went bust, though it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, largely because of its nearness to the city of london, and its quality road and rail links.

The town is situated near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about twenty six km from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
