A Saxon community followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading agitators were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck many times.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its manufacturers closed, though it remains a flourishing and booming town today, primarily because of its closeness to the city of london, plus the outstanding rail and road communications.
