River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the commune which expanded surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the citizens of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main culprits were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the 1980's, when much of its industry went bust, even so it is still a successful and expanding town today, largely due to the proximity to the city of london, plus the terrific rail and road links.

The town sits adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
