Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

An Anglo Saxon community came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the people of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading instigators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.
