Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, around thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has a population of around 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the commune that developed around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were subsequently hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industrial facilities shut down, even so it remains a thriving and booming town today, largely because of its close proximity to the capital, and the excellent rail and road communications.

The town stands adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some twenty six km from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
