The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town has got a population of around 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

An Anglo Saxon camp came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were subsequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless presumed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a serious manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.
