Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has got a populace of around 110,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the encampment that grew up in the area of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading instigators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry shut down, even so it is still a flourishing and developing town today, mostly due to the closeness to the city of london, plus the outstanding road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is located adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 26 km from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
