Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town boasts a population of around 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.
