River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the village which grew up surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main culprits were ultimately put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous assumed witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, making such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline in the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its manufacturers closed, although it remains a thriving and developing town today, primarily because of its nearness to the capital, and the good road and rail links.
