The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline in the 1980's, simply because a lot of its industry went bust, but it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, predominantly because of its nearness to the capital, plus its superb road and rail communications.
