An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, making such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck many times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industry shut down, though it is still a flourishing and booming town today, principally due to its closeness to the capital, and its first rate rail and road connections.
