The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the commune which grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading agitators were accordingly put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many suspected witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th century, crafting items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was struck a few times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into considerable decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its production facilities shut down, even so it still is a thriving and booming town today, primarily due to its closeness to London, and the first rate road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is located just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly twenty six kilometers from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
