River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the commune which grew up in the locality of the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the locals of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless alleged witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, making such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline in the 1980's, as a high percentage of its industries shut down, even so it is still a successful and expanding town today, for the most part because of its closeness to London, and the good rail and road communications.

The town sits near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
