The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of around 32 miles from the city of London. The town has a population of roughly 110,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the encampment that developed in the area of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were subsequently hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its manufacturing plants went bust, even so it still is a flourishing and booming town today, for the most part due to the nearness to the capital, and its excellent rail and road connections.
