Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the settlement that evolved around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading instigators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many assumed witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town during the 19th C, crafting items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit a number of times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through substantial decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry went bust, but it is still a successful and blooming town today, for the most part due to the proximity to the capital, plus the first rate road and rail links.
