Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a population of around 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

A Saxon community followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the ringleaders were accordingly hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous assumed witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, crafting such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit many times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.
