River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the encampment which expanded round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main agitators were consequently hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many presumed witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, mostly because of its nearness to London, and the first class road and rail communications.
