River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the village that grew up round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading instigators were accordingly hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless supposed witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its industry went bust, even so it still is a successful and developing town today, mainly because of its close proximity to the capital, and its terrific rail and road links.
