The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of about 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the village that grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous suspected witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a thriving and developing town today, largely due to the closeness to the city of london, plus the superb road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is set close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 16 mls from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
