Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, about thirty two miles from central London. The town has a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the encampment which expanded surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous supposed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town during the nineteenth century, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industry shut down, in spite of this it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly because of its closeness to the capital, and the good road and rail links.

The town is located near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some sixteen mls from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
