Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of approximately 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of approximately 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the town that grew up around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had become known by its modern title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the occupants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main agitators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a vital industrial town in the nineteenth century, making such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit a few times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the 1980's, simply because a lot of its plants closed, all the same it is still a thriving and booming town today, mainly because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus the outstanding rail and road communications.

The town stands just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
