The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, around 32 mls from central London. The town has got a populace of about 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the village which grew up around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many supposed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industries shut down, even so it remains a thriving and growing town today, primarily due to its closeness to London, and its good road and rail communications.

The town lies just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 26 kilometers from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
