River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in about the first century AD, and the encampment which expanded round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town in the 19th C, producing such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit quite a few times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industry closed down, but it still is a thriving and growing town today, primarily due to its proximity to the city of london, and its terrific road and rail connections.
