The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the community that expanded surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main agitators were subsequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless assumed witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industrial facilities closed, though it remains a thriving and blooming town today, primarily due to the close proximity to London, plus the superb rail and road links.

The town is situated beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 26 km from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
