Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has a populace of roughly 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the settlement that grew up surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were subsequently hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless presumed witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, producing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities shut down, though it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, mainly due to its nearness to the city of london, and the first class road and rail connections.

The town can be found close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 16 miles from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
