A Saxon settlement came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main culprits were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a serious manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck a number of times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industrial facilities closed down, yet it remains a flourishing and growing town today, predominantly due to the nearness to London, plus the first class rail and road links.
