The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly the 1st century AD, and the town which grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were consequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous presumed witches.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing such goods as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck many times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline in the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its industry closed down, even so it is still a successful and expanding town today, largely due to the nearness to the city of london, and the excellent rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is set beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly twenty six km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
