The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, about thirty two miles from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of around 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline in the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industry closed, in spite of this it is still a thriving and growing town today, mostly because of its closeness to London, plus its quality rail and road communications.
