Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the commune that expanded round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later being called by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous presumed witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a vital industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industry went bust, even so it remains a flourishing and developing town today, primarily because of its closeness to London, plus the good rail and road communications.
