Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the commune that evolved surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the occupants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading instigators were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a considerable manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, crafting such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the 1980's, when a lot of its industry went bust, yet it is still a successful and booming town today, primarily due to the closeness to the city of london, and the good road and rail links.

The town can be found close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some twenty six km drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
