The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of about thirty two miles from central London. The town has a populace of about 111,500 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the encampment which grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were consequently put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a considerable manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit many times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its manufacturers closed down, though it remains a flourishing and developing town today, mostly because of its proximity to the capital, plus its first class road and rail communications.

The town is situated adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
