Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the Chelmer and Can rivers, roughly thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of approximately 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the commune that expanded around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the citizens of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck many times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five years before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industry shut down, even so it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, principally because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the quality road and rail communications.

The town can be found just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
