The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of about thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of some 110,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).
