The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the encampment that expanded surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the people of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many alleged witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, making items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry went bust, though it remains a thriving and growing town today, predominantly due to the closeness to London, and its terrific road and rail connections.
