Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a drive of roughly thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has got a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the settlement that developed round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many supposed witches.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industry closed down, even so it remains a thriving and blooming town today, mostly because of its closeness to the city of london, and the first class road and rail connections.
