The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in about the first century AD, and the community that expanded round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement superseded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the inhabitants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless supposed witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town during the 19th century, crafting such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its industry shut down, however it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, largely because of its proximity to the capital, and its first class rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is set adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
