The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, around thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of roughly 111,500 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the town which evolved around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a serious manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its manufacturing plants went bust, even so it continues to be a successful and growing town today, primarily due to its nearness to the city of london, and its exceptional rail and road links.

The town stands close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
