Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in WW2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered substantial decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry shut down, but it remains a flourishing and developing town today, largely due to the nearness to the capital, and its excellent rail and road communications.
