Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a driving distance of approximately 32 mls from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main culprits were later hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through significant decline during the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its manufacturing facilities shut down, but it still is a flourishing and developing town today, mainly due to the proximity to the capital, and the first class road and rail communications.

The town is located beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately twenty six kilometers drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
