The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the community that grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the people of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main culprits were accordingly executed in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many assumed witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a serious industrial town in the 19th century, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.
