The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, about thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of around 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the town that grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading agitators were accordingly executed in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous alleged witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, crafting such items as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities closed down, even so it is still a flourishing and developing town today, mostly due to the nearness to the capital, and the excellent rail and road links.

The town is found near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 26 km drive from Colchester and about 51 km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
