The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 111,500 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the town which grew up around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many alleged witches.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities closed, even so it remains a thriving and growing town today, largely because of its closeness to the city of london, and its excellent rail and road links.

The town is positioned beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some sixteen miles from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
