Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the town that grew up in the locality of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the ringleaders were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many assumed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a serious manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry closed down, even so it remains a successful and booming town today, principally because of its proximity to the city of london, and its first rate rail and road links.

Chelmsford stands near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 26 kilometres car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
