The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the town that evolved round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main instigators were ultimately hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully hit quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline during the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industry went bust, all the same it continues to be a successful and booming town today, largely due to the close proximity to London, plus the excellent road and rail links.

Chelmsford is positioned just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London.
