Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town boasts a population of approximately 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the community that developed surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the people of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading agitators were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many suspected witches.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town in the 19th C, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck a few times.
