River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the settlement which grew up round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main instigators were ultimately hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, producing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit several times.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline during the 1980's, because a high percentage of its industry closed down, though it remains a successful and expanding town today, mostly due to the close proximity to London, plus the superb rail and road links.
