The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of some 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in around the 1st century AD, and the community that expanded surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, producing goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was struck a number of times.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its production facilities closed down, all the same it is still a successful and booming town today, mostly due to the proximity to the capital, plus the quality road and rail connections.
