An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were later executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into considerable decline during the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its industry shut down, even so it is still a successful and growing town today, primarily due to the close proximity to the capital, plus the good rail and road links.
