Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a drive of roughly thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of about 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around the 1st century AD, and the settlement which expanded surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the locals of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main agitators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many supposed witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a considerable industrial town during the nineteenth century, crafting such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit several times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry closed down, even so it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, for the most part because of its closeness to the capital, and the outstanding rail and road links.

The town stands close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 26 km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
