The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a population of roughly 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were accordingly hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town during the 19th C, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.
