Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly 32 mls from central London. The town has a population of around 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the community which grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were ultimately hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many alleged witches.

Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a vital manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its industrial facilities closed, though it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, largely due to its close proximity to London, plus its terrific rail and road links.

The town lies beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
