The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Chelmer and Can, about 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the encampment which grew up round the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the locals of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main agitators were later put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless supposed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, making such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the 1980's, as a high percentage of its industry closed, though it still is a successful and expanding town today, primarily due to its closeness to the city of london, and the exceptional road and rail links.

The town is situated close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about twenty six kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London.
