Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from central London. The town has got a population of approximately 111,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the village that evolved surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the residents of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were ultimately hung in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous presumed witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered substantial decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a thriving and booming town today, predominantly because of its nearness to the city of london, plus its quality road and rail links.
