The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of approximately 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the settlement which developed around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main agitators were ultimately hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a considerable industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit several times.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered considerable decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its manufacturers went bust, even so it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, mostly due to the closeness to the city of london, plus the superb rail and road links.
