Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the village that grew up around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the people of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industry closed down, even so it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, mostly due to the proximity to the capital, plus its excellent road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is found just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
