Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the commune that evolved in the locality of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the locals of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main agitators were consequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its industrial facilities shut down, though it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, primarily due to its close proximity to the city of london, and its good road and rail links.

The town can be found near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from central London.
