Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly 111,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the settlement which grew up round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were subsequently hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town in the 19th C, crafting such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its production facilities closed, nonetheless it remains a thriving and developing town today, largely due to the nearness to the city of london, plus the excellent rail and road links.

The town lies just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of the capital.
