A Saxon camp followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main instigators were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was hit a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into significant decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its plants shut down, though it remains a thriving and expanding town today, mostly due to the nearness to the capital, plus its first rate road and rail communications.
