Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of around 32 mls from the city of London. The town has a population of about 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment which developed around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading culprits were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless alleged witches.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a serious manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit several times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the 1980's, because much of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, though it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, mostly due to the proximity to the city of london, and the first class rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is located just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 16 miles from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
