The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, about 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of about 110,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the settlement which evolved surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was described as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless supposed witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, crafting products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its industry closed, though it remains a flourishing and booming town today, principally due to its close proximity to the capital, plus its good rail and road communications.
