The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly 111,500 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up in the vicinity of the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless assumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industries closed, in spite of this it is still a thriving and expanding town today, principally because of its closeness to the city of london, plus its exceptional road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is situated close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 16 miles from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
