Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has got a population of about 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

An Anglo Saxon camp came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading agitators were ultimately executed in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous alleged witches.
