Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the commune which developed round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was described as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the residents of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit quite a few times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industry shut down, even so it is still a thriving and growing town today, principally due to its nearness to London, and the exceptional rail and road links.

Chelmsford is situated near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
