The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of roughly thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of approximately 111,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.
