Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the settlement which developed round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main culprits were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous presumed witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a serious manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its plants ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, principally because of its nearness to the city of london, plus its first rate rail and road links.

The town is found just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 16 miles from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
