Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of around thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

A Saxon camp followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many alleged witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th century, making such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was struck quite a few times.
