A Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main instigators were ultimately hung in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its industrial facilities closed down, all the same it still is a successful and expanding town today, mainly because of its proximity to the capital, plus the excellent road and rail connections.
