An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. Across the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its industrial facilities closed, though it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily because of its close proximity to London, plus the outstanding rail and road communications.
