Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the village that grew up around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were ultimately put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many supposed witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a vital manufacturing town in the 19th century, making such items as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industrial facilities shut down, though it remains a successful and expanding town today, mostly due to its closeness to London, and its terrific road and rail communications.

The town is positioned close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 16 mls drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
