The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.
