Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit a few times.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its factories went bust, nonetheless it continues to be a successful and developing town today, primarily due to the closeness to London, and the exceptional road and rail connections.
