The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the commune which expanded around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the people of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main agitators were later hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th century, making such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it still is a thriving and developing town today, mostly due to the close proximity to the capital, and the good rail and road links.

The town lies just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
