Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a drive of about 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a population of some 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the encampment that grew up around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, but it remains a successful and growing town today, mostly due to its nearness to London, plus its quality rail and road connections.

The town is situated beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
