Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the commune that grew up round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later being called by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many assumed witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a vital manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its industry went bust, though it still is a successful and growing town today, for the most part due to its close proximity to the capital, plus its outstanding rail and road communications.

The town is set near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about twenty six km from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
