The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, around 32 mls from central London. The town has a populace of some 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the village that grew up round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, making such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline in the 1980's, when a lot of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, though it still is a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly due to the closeness to London, and the outstanding road and rail communications.

The town stands near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
