The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a population of roughly 111,500 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the encampment that evolved in the area of the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industries closed, though it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, mainly due to its nearness to London, and its first class rail and road communications.

The town is located near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
