The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the commune which evolved surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many alleged witches.

Through the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its industry closed, though it still is a thriving and booming town today, primarily due to its closeness to the city of london, plus the outstanding rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is located just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some sixteen mls from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
