Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the community that grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main agitators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many presumed witches.

Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was hit several times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a successful and developing town today, mostly due to its close proximity to London, and the quality road and rail communications.

The town is situated beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
