Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment which expanded round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its manufacturing facilities closed, though it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, predominantly due to its nearness to London, and the first class rail and road communications.

The town stands near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 26 kilometers drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
