Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the encampment which developed round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industry shut down, though it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, mainly because of its nearness to the capital, plus the exceptional road and rail links.
