It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the community which evolved round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was hit several times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into substantial decline during the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its manufacturing facilities shut down, though it remains a thriving and expanding town today, mostly due to its closeness to London, plus the exceptional road and rail communications.

The town is set beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
