As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the residents of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading agitators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many supposed witches.
