The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a drive of approximately thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of around 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the village that grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were later executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a serious industrial town in the 19th century, making goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its production facilities closed, even so it is still a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly because of its closeness to the capital, and its exceptional road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is set beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 26 kilometres car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
