The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of around 111,500 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the community which developed around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main instigators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous presumed witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry closed down, though it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, largely due to its proximity to the city of london, and its first rate rail and road communications.

Chelmsford stands close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
