The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has a populace of about 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the commune that evolved round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless presumed witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a significant manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, making items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit many times.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its industry closed, though it is still a successful and developing town today, mostly due to its closeness to London, and the superb rail and road links.

The town is located near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 26 kilometres from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
