The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the encampment which grew up in the area of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later being called by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were consequently put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous assumed witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a considerable industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was hit a few times.
