Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 111,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the commune that grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the residents of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were thereafter hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many assumed witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a considerable industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry shut down, even so it is still a successful and expanding town today, mainly because of its proximity to the city of london, and its exceptional road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is positioned near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 26 kilometres from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
