Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, approximately thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the community which developed in the vicinity of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main agitators were consequently executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless suspected witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town in the 19th century, making such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the 1980's, since a high percentage of its industries closed down, even so it still is a successful and blooming town today, primarily due to its closeness to the capital, plus the exceptional road and rail communications.

The town is located near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 16 mls from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
