Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the 1980's, because much of its industry closed down, even so it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, mostly due to the closeness to London, and the excellent rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
