River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the village that evolved in the area of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its industry closed, although it still is a flourishing and growing town today, primarily due to the close proximity to the capital, and the quality road and rail communications.
