The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from central London. The town has a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the community that grew up around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th C, crafting such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its factories closed down, though it is still a successful and blooming town today, predominantly due to its nearness to London, plus the first rate rail and road connections.
