Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the encampment that developed around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the locals of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many assumed witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industry went bust, even so it is still a flourishing and booming town today, largely due to the proximity to the city of london, and the superb rail and road links.

The town is located near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some twenty six kilometres from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
