In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading culprits were thereafter hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its industries closed down, even so it remains a thriving and booming town today, mainly due to the nearness to the city of london, and the outstanding road and rail communications.
