The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has got a populace of approximately 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the commune which grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the occupants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through considerable decline during the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry went bust, nevertheless it is still a flourishing and growing town today, mainly due to its proximity to the capital, plus its first rate rail and road connections.
