The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has got a populace of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the community which developed in the vicinity of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main culprits were later hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, making such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the 1980's, when a lot of its industrial facilities shut down, though it remains a flourishing and developing town today, primarily due to the close proximity to London, plus its first class road and rail communications.

The town is positioned close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately twenty six km drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
