The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a populace of about 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later being called by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the citizens of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were ultimately hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless presumed witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a significant industrial town in the 19th century, producing such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. The town entered serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industry closed down, yet it still is a successful and blooming town today, mostly because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus the superb rail and road communications.
