Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the community that developed in the area of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the occupants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main instigators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless assumed witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industry closed down, though it is still a thriving and blooming town today, principally because of its proximity to the city of london, plus its superb rail and road links.

The town is positioned just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
