River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the community that grew up in the area of the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the occupants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a vital industrial town during the 19th C, producing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industry closed down, though it is still a thriving and expanding town today, for the most part because of its nearness to the city of london, and its first rate rail and road communications.

The town sits near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
