Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a drive of some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in about the first century AD, and the commune that grew up in the locality of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the ringleaders were ultimately put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a major manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully struck several times.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline during the 1980's, because much of its industry went bust, though it remains a flourishing and growing town today, principally due to its closeness to the city of london, and the excellent rail and road communications.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 26 km from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
