The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has got a population of some 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the town which expanded surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were accordingly hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the 1980's, since a lot of its industry went bust, though it still is a successful and expanding town today, for the most part due to its closeness to the city of london, plus the terrific rail and road links.

Chelmsford is situated adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
