River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the village which grew up around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the occupants of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main culprits were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless suspected witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a lot of its industry went bust, even so it remains a successful and blooming town today, principally due to its proximity to the city of london, and its terrific rail and road links.
