Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has a population of approximately 111,500 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the citizens of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were later hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its factories ceased to be profitable, though it still is a thriving and expanding town today, for the most part due to the proximity to London, plus its good rail and road links.
