The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a populace of some 111,500 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the encampment which evolved in the locality of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main culprits were accordingly put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industry closed, even so it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, primarily due to its proximity to the city of london, and the quality road and rail links.

Chelmsford is set adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London.
