For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, making such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its industry closed down, in spite of this it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, mostly because of its proximity to the capital, plus the good rail and road connections.
