Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of approximately 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in around AD 60, and the settlement that grew up around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the occupants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading agitators were thereafter executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry went bust, though it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, for the most part due to its proximity to London, and its good rail and road connections.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 16 mls from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
