Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the encampment that expanded in the locality of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the locals of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through significant decline during the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its factories closed down, though it still is a successful and growing town today, principally because of its nearness to London, and the superb road and rail communications.

Chelmsford sits beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 26 kilometres drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
