Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was hit a number of times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industrial facilities shut down, yet it remains a thriving and expanding town today, largely due to the close proximity to the city of london, and the quality rail and road links.
