Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of roughly 32 miles from the city of London. The town has a population of approximately 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly the first century AD, and the encampment that evolved around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 being called by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a serious industrial town during the 19th C, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry went bust, even so it remains a thriving and booming town today, largely because of its nearness to the city of london, plus its first class road and rail connections.

The town is situated near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
