Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has a population of about 111,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were ultimately executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing in WW2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its production facilities shut down, even so it is still a successful and growing town today, principally due to the nearness to the city of london, and its first class rail and road communications.

The town lies adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around sixteen miles from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
