Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of approximately 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of around 111,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the community that grew up surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a considerable industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline in the 1980's, since much of its factories closed down, even so it still is a flourishing and blooming town today, principally due to the nearness to the capital, plus the superb road and rail connections.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 16 mls from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
