River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the village that grew up around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment superseded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main instigators were later hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit many times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its industry shut down, though it remains a flourishing and growing town today, largely due to the proximity to the city of london, and its exceptional rail and road links.
